Walton Descendant Visits Eleutherian
“I learned about Eleutherian College when I was going through documents of my family history that I inherited. My 5th generation grandfather, Abraham Walton, was on the very first board at the college and was instrumental in starting up this college along with many others. Their bravery was unprecedented! Knowing that he and his family were conductors on the Underground Railroad, and were committed to bettering the lives of so many, makes me so proud. Through the future generations in my family, they continued to help and support Eleutherian College as board members, teachers, and even students.
I had the privilege of touring the college last year and, goodness, if the walls could talk! It feels like you could step into a classroom and the memories would just come to life. The history, the stories…oh my! It was hard to leave.
In order to preserve this wonderful piece of important history, it does need ALOT of help from the community, including donations, and possible grants, to keep the memories alive.
It is so important to not lose this piece of history. So many stories of these families and students show such strong perseverance and radical commitment to helping others to freedom.
I love that I found my family roots; I was honored to hear about my ancestors within the history of this college and the surrounding area in Indiana.
I will definitely be back!”
